Whitby History

When the township was originally surveyed in 1792, it was named Whitby after an English seaport town in Yorkshire. Whitby’s founder, Peter Perry, established a downtown business centre in 1836. The town was incorporated in 1855, after a road was built from Whitby Harbour to Lake Simcoe and Georgian Bay to attract traders and settlers. Whitby was once the location of Camp X, a secret spy training facility established during the Second World War by Sir William Stephenson, the “Man Called Intrepid.”
