Oakville History

Oakville's history began in 1827 by Colonel William Chisholm. Chisholm purchased the land from the Mississauga people to build a shipyard. The town flourished in the timber and shipbuilding industries for the 19th century. Oakville's harbour served as an entry point for African American slaves. Oakville was incorporated as a town in 1857. In 1962, Oakville merged with the townships Trafalgar and Bronte.
