North Bay is named after its position on the shore of Lake Nipissing.

North Bay, a quiet city on Northeast Ontario, has a population of 51,553 (2016 estimate). The city is located in the traditional territory of the Nipissing First Nation people. In 2009, North Bay was used as a filming location for The Kids in the Hall’s eight-part television miniseries Death Comes to Town.

North Bay History

North Bay was once only inhabited by indigenous people, surveyors, and voyageurs traveling the major canoe route west from Montreal. The population surged after the arrival of the Canadian Pacific Railway in 1882. North Bay was settled by John Ferguson and was incorporated as a town in 1891.

School-aged children in North Bay are served by the Near North District School Board, which consists of 28 elementary schools and eight secondary schools throughout the region. Canadore College, founded in 1967, has a full-time enrolment of 3,500 students. Its North Bay campus is surrounded by over 26 km of wilderness trails. Nipissing University became an independent University in 1992. It is known for its small class sizes and beautiful residences that Globe & Mail rated as the best in Canada.
