How to Move Long Distance

How to Move Long Distance

Moving to another part of the neighbourhood is one thing. But moving to a new city or province? That’s a whole other story. Let’s face it – long-distance moves can be stressful. From the planning and packing to the costs and the time it takes to hire the right moving company, moving is no easy feat. Luckily, Atlas Van Lines is here to help. Not only do we offer top-notch long-haul moving services in Canada, but we’re also moving experts. And today, we’re going to share our top tips on how to move long-distance. Check out our step-by-step guide to long-distance moving below.

Step-By-Step Guide to Moving Long Distance

Follow this step-by-step guide, and we promise your long-distance move will go off without a hitch.

1. Start Planning Early

Long-distance moves take careful time and attention. For this reason, we always recommend starting as early as possible. In the early planning phases, you should be researching moving companies, developing a rough timeline, and building a to-do list. Keep in mind that the more you put off planning your move, the more pressure and stress you will feel down the line.

2. Create A Checklist

When planning a long-distance move, it’s important to create a checklist. Each item on the checklist should be accompanied by a due date or realistic timeline of how long it will take to complete. Examples of items on your checklist might be enrolling your children in their new school, packing up each room in your current home, or hiring a moving company. If you have a clear timeline of events related to your move, it will make it easier to stay organized and on top of things.

3. Hire A Reputable Moving Company

Hiring a reputable moving company is the third (and perhaps most important) step in planning your long-distance move. Begin this step by using your research from step one. Narrow down your list of prospective long-distance moving companies and then reach out to each for a quote. When requesting moving quotes, try to be as specific as possible. This way, you will receive the most accurate quote possible. To provide an accurate quote, you will need to know the basic information about your move, including the services you need, the addresses of your current and future homes, and the possessions being moved. Some companies will perform a detailed evaluation free of charge, where they examine your home either in-person or virtually to provide an accurate estimate. It’s also a good idea to check each moving company’s availability, especially if you strongly prefer a certain moving date. Ultimately, if you aren’t sure which moving company to pick, we recommend basing your choice on reputation, reliability, safety, flexibility, and customer service – all things we pride ourselves on here at Atlas Van Lines.

4. Set Your Budget

Before settling on a certain moving company, consider your budget. Local moving costs are vastly different from long-distance moving costs, so you should expect to pay more for a long-haul move. Once you’ve received quotes from multiple moving companies, compare them (as well as what is included with each company’s services) and decide which one best aligns with your budget. Keep in mind that there may be additional costs associated with your move to consider, like the cost of moving insurance or the cost of a hotel room for the first night in your new city.

5. Gather the Necessary Paperwork

To ensure your move goes off without a hitch, make sure you have all the necessary paperwork. Depending on where you’re moving, this could mean visas, valid driver’s licenses, customs declarations, and more.

6. Hook Up New Utilities

The last thing you want is to arrive at your new home only to realize there is no running water or electricity. That is why you should always hook up the utilities in your new home before you arrive. Ideally, the utilities should be turned on before your arrival or in the case of internet and cable, scheduled for a day or two after you arrive.

7. Get Packing

You don’t want to save packing to the last minute. Start collecting cardboard boxes, bubble wrap, and other packing materials early so that you can pack at your own pace. You might begin with rooms that seldom get used or out-of-season items, like packing up your winter clothes during the summer months. Take special care when packing fragile items and remember to leave soft items, like towels, linens, pillows, or clothing, to wrap around breakables for extra protection.

8. Declutter and Donate

When packing for a long-distance move, we always recommend taking the opportunity to declutter. In other words, don’t pack what you don’t use. If you come across something that you haven’t used or worn in a year, or perhaps you didn’t even remember you have, it’s likely a sign that it should be donated, recycled, or discarded.

9. Leave Out Items That Can’t Be Moved

There are certain items that long-distance moving companies don’t allow you to move, such as hazardous or flammable materials, like hairspray or nail polish remover. Be sure to leave these out of your boxes. In addition, if you’re moving cross-border, you’ll need to research the laws in that country.

10. Pack and Label Boxes by Room

The simplest and most effective way to pack up your home is to pack it by room. This will make it easy to unpack on the other end. Beyond packing your boxes by room, be sure to label them accordingly so the movers know exactly where each box is going.

11. Invest in Quality Moving Materials

Moving materials can make or break a move – literally! If your items aren’t packed in the right materials, they can be prone to breakage. And the last thing you want is to open a box of your belongings at your new house to find a bunch of broken knick-knacks. To avoid this, use sturdy moving boxes reinforced with packing tape. We also recommend bubble wrap and clean packing paper. Of course, fragile items should be wrapped individually and all boxes should have some kind of shock-absorbing materials, such as crumpled newspaper.

12. Consider A Moving Container

For the utmost security, consider renting a moving container to load your items into. Moving containers, like Atlas Van Lines’ Affinity Vault containers, are extremely safe and secure. They also act as a temporary storage solution, so if you aren’t sure when your new home will be ready for occupancy, you can keep your items in your moving container for as long as you need. All Atlas Van Lines moving containers are tracked and stored in one of our security system-monitored, climate-controlled moving centres.

13. Keep Valuables With You

Although reputable moving companies like Atlas Van Lines are known for their safety and security, it might be wise to keep valuables with you. For example, anything delicate, expensive, or holding sentimental value, such as jewelry, might be better off packed in your car or carry-on luggage.

14. Make Your Travel Arrangements

You’ve hired a trusted moving company and packed up your belongings – now what? The last step is to make your travel arrangements. Depending on the distance between your current home and your new home, you might opt to drive between them. If this is the case, be sure to gas up the day before so you can hit the road as soon as the movers leave. Alternatively, if you’re travelling to your new home by plane, book your plane tickets well in advance and be sure to make arrangements for your pet (if applicable).

Tips For Long-Distance Moving

Tips For Long-Distance Moving

If you’re planning a long-distance move and aren’t sure where to start, then you’ve come to the right place. Atlas Van Lines has been in business for over 55 years, which means we know a thing or two about moving. As long-distance moving specialists, we are here to share our expertise and resources to ensure your move goes off without a hitch. Without further ado, check out a list of top tips for long-distance moving below.

1. Schedule your move during the off-season

Many people plan to move during the summer, and because of this, the summertime is one of the most expensive times to move. If you want to move on a budget, consider moving during the off-season or on a weekday in the middle of the month.

2. Make an inventory list

As you start packing boxes, it can be easy to forget what you’ve already packed. For this reason, before you start packing, we suggested making an inventory of your belongings. Once you’ve packed an item, check it off the list. When you make an inventory list, you’ll always have something to refer back to when you unpack in your new home to ensure everything made it safe and sound.

3. Plan where items will go in your new house

Before moving, visualize your new home and think long and hard about where you’d like each item to go. This is a great way to ensure you only pack what you need. For example, if you’re downsizing, then chances are all of your existing furniture won’t fit in your new home. If this is the case, don’t bother bringing it with you. The more items you pack (especially bulky or heavy items like furniture), the more expensive your move will be. So compare the square footage and floor plan of your current home to your new home and plan out where each item will go. If you don’t have room for a certain item, make a plan to donate, recycle, or discard it.

4. Declutter, declutter, declutter

There’s nothing quite like a move to make you realize what you don’t need. Moving forces you to go through your belongings, which will likely make you realize just how much stuff you don’t use. Take this opportunity to declutter. Make piles of items to donate, recycle, or discard so you avoid packing them “just in case.” For example, if you’ve never touched a certain old kitchen appliance, have books or magazines on your shelf that you know you’ll never read again, or clothes you haven’t worn in over a year, it’s likely a sign to say goodbye.

5. Separate valuable items you want to keep with you

As you begin to pack, be sure to separate valuable items that you want to keep with you. Depending on the value of the item, you might get stressed at the thought of it being thrown into a box with a bunch of other items. For example, you may wish to pack jewellery, money, or items with high sentimental value in a separate box that you take with you in the car or plane on moving day.

6. Pack a box of items you will need upon arrival

Some items are more important than others, especially on the day of arrival. Think about what you want to have easy access to on day one, like towels, bedding, toilet paper, a few pots and pans, and a couple of sets of dishware. In essence, the items you need to eat and sleep on that first night in your new home. Pack a box with these items and label it clearly.

7. Organize and label boxes as you pack

While it might be tempting to throw belongings into boxes haphazardly, this will only make your job harder on the other end. For this reason, we recommend packing your boxes by room. For example, the beginning, toys, and decor in your child’s room should all go in their own boxes. Similarly, kitchenware should also be in its own series of boxes. If you want to get fancy, you can create an inventory list and assign each box a corresponding number. Speaking of which, remember to label your boxes. It won’t matter how organized the inside of your boxes are if they aren’t labelled correctly. Make it easy on yourself and your movers by clearly labelling the contents or corresponding room of each box.

8. Buy moving coverage

Moving coverage is important, whether you opt for moving insurance or content protection coverage. Moving insurance provides peace of mind knowing that if something goes wrong, you will be financially protected. Moving insurance can be purchased directly from an insurance company. However, most moving companies also offer their own coverage plans. For example, Atlas Van Lines has two types of content protection coverage available to customers: full value protection and minimal protection. Full value protection is strongly recommended to protect your household goods. With this valuation option, Atlas Van Lines would repair any lost, damaged, or destroyed items or replace them with items of like kind and quality, or offer you a cash settlement for the market value of the items. In contrast, minimal protection allows you to file a claim for a lost or damaged item. Claims are based on the item’s weight multiplied by 60 cents per pound.

9. Hire experienced long-distance movers you can trust

Our final tip for long-distance moving? Hire movers you can trust. Reputable movers have years of experience in the industry and offer top-notch customer service from start to finish. To ensure you choose a trusted moving company, compare quotes, read customer reviews, interview prospective candidates, and then choose the mover that best fits your budget and needs.

FAQs

How far ahead of time should you plan your long-distance move?

Long-distance moves should ideally be planned no less than two months (eight weeks) in advance.

What is the first thing to pack when moving?

Out-of-season items or items that are in your home for aesthetic rather than functional purposes can be packed first. Essentially, any items that you won’t need to use between the day of packing and your moving day can be packed first.

What makes a good long-distance moving company?

A good long-distance moving company is one that is experienced, professional, reputable, flexible, and secure. For example, Atlas Van Lines prides itself on its customer service. We have earned the reputation as the go-to long-distance moving company in Canada, and we don’t take that responsibility lightly. How have we earned that reputation, you might be wondering? It all comes down to our standard of service. First, all of our movers and van operators are both experienced and professional. They will safely and carefully load all belongings into the moving truck, using protective blankets, quilted moving pads, clear plastic, and furniture pads to safeguard your items. Further, to protect your current and future home, runners will be put down to protect the floors. The Atlas Van Lines crew will also assemble and reassemble all necessary items, such as bed frames, quickly and efficiently. Beyond our high level of experience and professionalism, we understand that flexibility is a key part of any long-distance move. After all, a lot can happen when transporting items from point A to point B. We make a concerted effort to accommodate your schedule at all times. Finally, as a full-service moving company, we not only offer long-distance moving but also secure storage solutions. We have moving containers of all sizes for you to transport and temporarily store your items in, should you wish to do so. Ultimately, a good long-distance moving company is one that meets the criteria above.

What should you not pack in a long-distance move?

Items that you should not pack for a long-distance move include anything alive, such as houseplants, perishable food that is likely to spoil in transit, and of course, hazardous or flammable materials, such as paint, aerosols, pesticides, gasoline, and more. As an extra precaution, we also recommend packing valuables, like money or jewellery, separately and travelling with them on the day of the move.

COVID-19 pandemic has increased number of food-insecure students in Canada

COVID-19 pandemic has increased number of food-insecure students in Canada

Oakville, ON. July 13, 2020

Throughout the onset of COVID-19, we ve been working closely with our Atlas agent AMJ Campbell and Meal Exchange on the Good Food Now project which connects students in need throughout the greater Toronto area with healthy and sustainable foods. During this project we are grateful to have been able to help feed hundreds of people who are affected by food insecurities especially during these challenging times. Please continue reading to see the full press release by Meal Exchange or click here.

Since the COVID-19 pandemic began, thousands of post-secondary students have been affected by food insecurity. We knew before the pandemic that nearly 40 percent of students were food-insecure, and that number has increased significantly over the last several weeks – and the need continues to grow.

Though not part of our regular work at Meal Exchange, we were able to pivot our programming; within a matter of days, hundreds of students had registered for weekly good food boxes to help carry them through the pandemic. We were quick to mobilize to support the delivery of these food boxes thanks to the generous support from the McConnell Foundation and Sobeys. To date, we have offered over 2,000 boxes and supported over 1,400 students across Canada.

Unique partnerships have continued to emerge. First 100km Foods, which was primarily a food distributor to restaurants, shifted their program to offer fresh produce boxes to individuals and families and now post-secondary students.

While the boxes were ready to go, we needed to find a delivery mechanism, and so an incredible partnership was forged with Atlas Van Lines Canada and AMJ Campbell, investing nearly $100,000 in kind to utilize their moving trucks to deliver food support to students.

Though completely outside their general scope of business as well, for the last few months, these exceptional moving companies – Atlas Van Lines Canada and AMJ Campbell – have worked diligently to get boxes of produce to students across the Greater Toronto Area.

The need to continue to offer such supports to students is essential. BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, people of colour) students are especially vulnerable to food insecurity, as well as international students. Many have limited options when accessing food, employment and secure housing.

International students are in even more dire situations, because they are limited with their employment options. Employment can only be sought out within the field for which they are currently studying – as an example, someone studying hospitality will have limited options in finding jobs within the industry at this time. With no opening of borders in sight, these students don’t have the luxury of returning home, as domestic students may have the option of doing.

The average cost of a good food box is $21 dollars a week. We need your help, and we need your help now. Students are in need, and our goal is to continue to support as many students as possible at this time.

For students in need of support, or for people interested in donating, please visit goodfoodnow.ca.

Farheen Khan is the executive director of Meal Exchange, and has been a community advocate within the anti-poverty and anti-violence sectors for a number of years.

Leading Van Line is Committed to Reducing Food Waste and Fighting Hunger Atlas Canada and Move For Hunger Announce Collaborative Effort to Help Feed Families In Need Nationwide

Oakville, ON. June 8th, 2018

Atlas Canada, whose agents across every province and territory provide local, long distance, international, cross border and specialized moving services, has renewed its partnership with Move For Hunger, a national non-profit organization that mobilizes the relocation industry to fight hunger and reduce food waste, to provide much-needed assistance to food banks across Canada.

People tend to throw a lot of things away when they move, including perfectly good food. As proud partners of Move For Hunger, 33 of Atlas Canada’s partner agents are collecting non-perishable food from their customers and delivering it to local food banks.

“Atlas Canada agents have already delivered more than 16,600 lbs. of food to food banks and pantries in the communities they serve,” said Adam Lowy, Executive Director and Founder of Move For Hunger. “One in 8 households in Canada are food insecure. We’re grateful that Atlas Canada recognized the urgency of the problem and has made a commitment to helping their neighbors in need.”

“This partnership is a great fit for Atlas as we believe in serving the communities we live and work in,” said Barry Schellenberg, President of Atlas Canada. “Ending hunger in this country is something we are proud to be part of. Working as a team, our customers, Atlas agents, and Move For Hunger help food banks across Canada feed people in need.”

Through the generous support of partners like Atlas Canada, Move For Hunger can continue to help the more than 4 million Canadians who are struggling to find their next meal. For more information about Move For Hunger and how you can make a difference please visit  www.MoveForHunger.org.

Atlas Earns Additional Federal Government Business

Oakville, ON. November 20, 2017

Atlas Van Lines in Canada has earned a substantial increase in Federal Government moves for achieving higher than the benchmark for the valuation period of April 1 – August 31, 2017.

Atlas scores were higher than the benchmark in all areas of the Federal Government Value Index Rating:
CSI – Claims
CCI – Penalty Reduction and Contract Compliance
ESI – Positive Survey Responses

“This represents a 110% improvement within the current contract and a substantial increase in move volumes” said Fred Haladay, Senior VP and Chief Commercial Officer. “This was only possible through the focused efforts of our Operations, Avail, and Customer Service Departments along with our entire Atlas agent network”.

Atlas personnel and Atlas agents across Canada have focused on improving the Value Index Score through training, continual education on contract compliance, weekly emails and continual reviews by management at all levels. This new volume is retroactive to September 1st and will mean a significant increase in revenues for the Atlas agents and Van Operators.
